A Heart That Serves Both: How to Support Our Troops and Feed the Children in Your Community

I believe that a community is only as strong as its most vulnerable members. Today, I want to talk to you about two groups that hold a very special place in our hearts here at Friends & Allies Inc.: our brave veterans and the children in our neighborhoods.
At first glance, these two groups might seem to have different needs. But look closer. Both require a foundation of safety, compassion, and a community that refuses to look away. When we support our troops and feed the children in your community, we aren't just checking boxes. We are building a legacy of care.
It's about showing up. It's about ensuring a soldier feels seen after they return home. It's about making sure a child doesn't have to wonder where their next meal is coming from. Let’s dive into how you can make a real difference for both today.
Standing Tall: How to Support Our Troops and Navigate PTSD
Our soldiers give everything for us. Yet, for many, the battle doesn’t end when they take off the uniform. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a reality for many of our heroes. It can feel like a heavy, invisible weight. But here is the good news: you can help lighten that load.
To truly help our soldiers, we must first understand what they are going through. PTSD isn't just "being stressed." It is a complex response to trauma that can include intrusive memories, hyper-vigilance, and feeling emotionally numb.
Listen Without Judgment
Sometimes, the best way to support our troops is to simply listen. You don’t need to have all the answers. In fact, you don't need any answers. Just create a safe space. Let them know it is okay to share their feelings, or to say nothing at all. Your presence is a powerful tool for healing.
Encourage Peer Support
Isolation is the enemy of recovery. Encourage the veterans in your life to connect with others who have served. Whether it’s a local VFW post or a specialized support group, talking to people who "get it" can be life-changing.
Be Trauma-Aware
Small adjustments in our environment can make a big difference for someone living with PTSD. Avoid sudden loud noises when possible. Be mindful of personal space. By creating a predictable and calm environment, you help our heroes feel safe in their own communities again.

Nourishing the Future: Feed the Children in Your Community
While we look after those who protected our past and present, we must also nourish our future. It breaks my heart to know that so many kids right here in our own backyard face food insecurity. This is why our community programs are so vital.
Did you know that 1 in 5 households with children experience food insecurity? That means in a typical classroom, several kids might be trying to learn on an empty stomach. We can change that. When you help provide food insecurity programs for kids, you aren't just giving them a meal, you are giving them the energy to dream.
Why Help for Hungry Children Matters
Hunger is a thief. It steals a child’s focus. It steals their health. It even steals their confidence. When we provide help for hungry children, we are investing in our entire community's future. A well-fed child is a child who can succeed in school and grow into a healthy adult.
Support Local Food Initiatives
There are so many ways to get involved:
Backpack Programs: Many schools have programs that send food home for the weekend. These are lifelines for families.
Summer Meal Sites: When school is out, the meals often stop. Support local libraries or parks that host summer feeding programs.
Food Drives: Start one at your office or church! Focus on nutritious, shelf-stable items like beans, brown rice, and canned proteins.
I’ve seen the smiles on children's faces when they receive a warm, healthy meal. It’s more than just calories; it’s a message that says, "We care about you." You can read more about our recent efforts on our blog.

Small Acts, Big Impact: How You Can Help Today
I know what you might be thinking: "I’m just one person. Can I really make a difference?" The answer is a resounding yes.
At Friends & Allies Inc., we see the power of collective action every day. Whether you are donating your time, your resources, or your voice, every bit counts. Here is a simple checklist to get you started:
Educate Yourself: Learn the signs of PTSD and the statistics of child hunger in your specific zip code. Knowledge is the first step toward empathy.
Volunteer: Join us at one of our upcoming events. We often need hands to pack meals or help organize community outreach.
Donate: Even a small monthly donation can provide consistent help for hungry children. You can donate here to join our mission.
Spread the Word: Share this blog post! Sometimes, raising awareness is the most important thing you can do to support our troops.
The Strength of Resilience
I often think about the symbol of a heart. Not just a soft, fragile heart, but a strong, resilient one. That is what our community represents. We are here to stand beside the vulnerable, whether they are a veteran struggling with the echoes of war or a child facing the quiet crisis of hunger.

When we combine our efforts to help our soldiers and feed the children in your community, we create a safety net that is impossible to break. We show that compassion has no boundaries.
We are proud of the work we do at Friends & Allies Inc., but we can't do it alone. We need you. Your kindness is the fuel that keeps our programs running. It is the hope that lights up a dark room.
